TOASTMASTERS SPEECH CONTESTS!!! |
KNOW THE UPCOMING DATES BEFORE COMMITTING TO A CONTEST. Before you decide to compete in a contest, find out when all the upcoming contests will take place to ensure they do not conflict with your schedule. MANY times the best speakers never make it to the next level of competition because they forgot about a family vacation or business meeting that occurred on the same date. Therefore, the best representative of Clubs, Areas, Divisions, Districts and Regions are NOT always the ones competing at the next competition. Check your schedule and PLAN to go ALL THE WAY! You deserve it! HAVE A PLAN "B" - Be SURE your Second Place Winners at each and every level attend the subsequent contest. Many times plans have changed at the very last moment which prevented a First Place Winner from attending. Without the second place winner, they were no longer represented. The International Speech Contest is the only contest of the four annual contests (Humorous, Evaluation, Table Topics and International) that goes beyond the District level. Winners from District 47 will compete in the Region 8 Contest and hopefully will progress to the International Contest. The winner of that contest will hold the title of World Champion of Public Speaking. The International Contest is also the only one that has a prerequisite that a member must have at least SIX manual speeches complete before competing. The only exception to this, is regarding newly Chartered Clubs, where the six manual speech requirement is waived. All other contests (Table Topics, Humor, etc) do not have any prerequisites other than to be a paid member of a Toastmasters Club that is also in good standing. The subject of the International Speech Contest is up to you, but it should be one of universal interest (motivational, inspiring, etc). You can use humor and every other technique you’ve learned in Toastmasters to make it effective. The best (winning) speeches seem to be those that take you on an emotional roller coaster from joy, to struggle (overcoming some sort of hardship/life lesson, etc) back to joy again. It can be about your own life or someone else’s. As David Brook (World Champion) says “To make a point… tell a story”. All Speech Contests Follow This Progression: 1st Competition is at the
Club Level, where eligible club members compete for First Place. The International (World Championship) Speech
Contest proceeds to Two More Levels: Speak UP! And accept the challenge of the following annual Speech Contests. Everyone WINS simply be joining in.
